Spirited Army Sports Club team came from behind 6-16 down to hold the gallant CR & FC outfit by 16 points (2 tries, 2 penalties) to 16 (2 tries, 1 drop goal, 1 penalty) draw in their opening SLR ‘A’ Division Inter Club League Rugby Tournament first round match played at Havelock grounds in Havelock Park yesterday. CR led 16 points to 6 at half time.
After being contained in the first half of the game, the Army forwards along with their speedy three quarters led by inspirational captain Gayan Salinda came up with a sterling display in the second half of the match to out play their counterparts in the loose and mid field.
CR speedy centre cum play maker Kanchana Ramanayake was a source of inspiration to his entire team-mates with his spectacular runs down the ground and capped a fine performance in the match by scoring a brilliant try in the game.
For the Army Sports Club team, the two tries were scored by hooker Chalika Sadaruwan (one) and second row forward Thirusha Adikaram (one), while the drop goal was fired across by replacement fly half Tharindu Hettiarachchi and the penalty was put over by skipper cum full back Gayan Salinda.
CR & FC two tries were scored by centre kanchana Ramanayake and hooker Supun Warnakulasuriya one apiece, while scrum half and skipper Kavindu Costa slotted in the two penalties.
